For example, if the speed governor is set to 65 mph then the vehicle will only be able to travel at 65 mph or less, regardless of whether the driver has the accelerator to the floor. Use cases for speed governing are most relevant to fleets wanting to reduce or eliminate speeding within their fleet operations to avoid preventable speeding related accidents or unwanted speeding fines. However, setting speed governors can also deliver improved fuel economy. In a report from the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), it is noted that there can be as much as a 30% fuel economy gap between best and worst drivers. By preventing drivers from operating the vehicle out of range of peak fuel economy, fleet managers can lessen this gap and save money.
Dynamic Speed Limiting
Where static speed governing caps a preset maximum speed, dynamic speed governing provides the ability to dynamically cap speed to the posted speed limit. By pulling in speed limit information from 3rd party sources, Derive VQ can apply maximum speed settings that reflect the specific speed limit of the road currently being driven. The limit updates to the road where the vehicle is located as the vehicle proceeds from one location to the next.
