Upgrading the Police Fleet: Meet Derive’s Smarter Law Enforcement Vehicles

Hi! I’m a police patrol car. You’ve seen me cruising through the streets, idling near the police station, or zooming down the freeway in hot pursuit. My mission is obviously different from that of other automobiles such as delivery trucks, maintenance vehicles, and family cars. But with standard factory settings, I perform the same as any other vehicle that’s the same make, model, and year. Derive has found a way to uniquely upgrade my control systems so that I can perform more intelligently based on my specific use as a police vehicle.

Here are a few examples of how Derive is optimizing police fleets to operate more intelligently, regardless of who’s behind the wheel:

Problem:
The City of Lakeland was experiencing laggy throttle response times. Vehicles were slow to respond to a driver’s request for acceleration—not a good situation when officers are required to act quickly!

Solution:
After Derive upgraded the control systems, the lag was cleaned up to provide crisper, and more immediate response times. The vehicles now perform more optimally for officers on the job.

Problem:
Port St. Lucie’s police fleet was struggling with steep annual fuel costs. For many police officers, the car is not only their form of transportation, but it’s also their office, which means the car is always on so that computer equipment is powered and the space is comfortably heated or cooled. With engines sometimes running up to 8 hours of a 12-hour shift, fuel costs multiply quickly.

Solution:
Derive was able to upgrade every vehicle in the fleet to idle more efficiently and consume less fuel. The result was a 12 percent reduction in idle fuel consumption and a more than 11 percent decrease in total fuel spend.

You already know that identical vehicles are used for different purposes, and now Derive has found a way to make police cars perform more intelligently according to their specific use. No matter the type of vehicle, Derive’s technology is empowering fleet managers to run smarter and more efficient fleets.
